Gameplay: Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn is an action role-playing video game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4.

We saw early footage of the game at Gamescom and were impressed but skeptical if the studio would be able to deliver on the promise of such smooth graphics, responsive controls and epic boss battles. Now that the game is out and we have had a chance to play a bit of the game here are our thoughts- but before reading on, check out some gameplay footage:

Our First Impressions

Mike: Having put in a little time into the game, the word cinematic is the first thing that comes to mind. It’s not just the graphics that blew me away. The way the developers chose to show the characters out and about in this post apocalyptic dystopia reminds me of Dean Kudney. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the controls were, how the cut scenes and actual gameplay were almost seamless and how the sound was tailored just right for each scene. The voice acting didn’t feel unnatural (read: Resident Evil 1) and because of it even at the start you begin to care about Rost and Aloy, and look forward to where the story takes them.

Overall I am really enjoying what I have seen so far and am really excited about the upcoming big battles. Kudos to Guerilla and Sony for a real gem.

Shane: The opening of the game was a beautiful introduction to a world well past the present. As you are first running through a cave as young Aloy, you are really dragged into the world as you see recognizable features throughout. A desk with a computer and chair, a few beds. It is our world but hundreds of years in the future after something has happened and machines run the lands like animals. I did notice a few issues with the normal PS4, low draw distances at the start and some trees just popping into view a few feet away, but since I have moved into the open world part I have not had an issue. The story is gripping from the start and the choice of running around the game and killing things or being sneaky and hiding is a great option to have in the game

I really like what Guerilla has done with the game and I look forward to spending more time in the game and finding out the whole story. Definitely worth buying this if you own a PS4.
