Before it was released on the 28th of April 2017, Dear White People was already making waves. In February, Netflix released a trailer for the show and it was not meet with the intended anticipation. In fact, people started to drop their subscriptions out of protest!

According to imdb, Dear White People takes place “At a predominantly white Ivy League college, a diverse group of students navigate various forms of racial and other types of discrimination.”

After a freternity throws a party where white people dress up with Black Face, yes that unfortunately is a thing, there is a bit of civil unrest among all the students there. So the students start to stand up to have their voices heard.

If Dear White People sounds familiar, it is because the movie with the same name and story was released in 2014. In fact, a large part of the cast are from the movie as well. Just from the trailer for the movie I can identify two speeches that sound exactly the same also. So why make it a TV show?

I never watched the movie so I can’t comment on how good, or bad, it is. What I can do is give you an idea or not of whether you should watch it! This is a show that looks on the world from a satirical point of view. However if it gets people talking about the racism issue that is around the world, job well done!

The first two episodes do exactly what they are meant to. They pull you in. The writing is both smart and funny. The characters seem to have depth and the first two stories follow each other well. Each episode looks at the lives of different people around campus, while intertwining them all together.

The story follows Samantha White, played by Logan Browning, who is pissed off at all the white privileged in the school. To have a voice, she has her own show on the college radio station called, Dear White People. After being judge for most of her life on the colour of her skin, she has become quite the activist. And so, she is doing everything in her power to open people’s eyes to the racism that exists in her every day life. The portrayal of the racism at the start is not out of nastiness but ignorance.

I’m sure this is not everyone’s cup of tea, but from what I have already seen this is worth watching. Note that, this is definitely aimed at adults.
